Odd spiral appears amid northern lights in Alaska night sky

Northern light enthusiasts got a surprise mixed in with the green bands of light dancing in the Alaska skies: A light baby blue spiral resembling a galaxy appeared amid the aurora for a few minutes ANCHORAGE, Alaska -- Northern light enthusiasts got a surprise mixed in with the green bands of light dancing in the Alaska skies: A light baby blue spiral resembling a galaxy appeared amid the aurora for a few minutes. The cause early Saturday morning was a little more mundane than an alien invasion or the appearance of a portal to the far reaches of the universe. It was simply excess fuel that had been released from a SpaceX rocket that launched from California about three hours before the spiral appeared. Sometimes rockets have fuel that needs to be jettisoned, said space physicist Don Hampton, a research associate professor at the University of Alaska Fairbanks Geophysical Institute. “When they do that at high altitudes, that fuel turns into ice,” he said. “And if it happens to be in...

Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer signed two gun safety bills into law requiring universal background checks for all purchases and safe gun and ammunition storage in homes. Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer signed two gun safety bills into law Thursday, requiring universal background checks for all gun sales and the safe storage of firearms and ammunition in homes. The legislation comes after a gunman opened fire at two locations on Michigan State University's main campus in East Lansing in February, shooting eight students, three fatally. After an hourslong manhunt, police found the suspect -- identified as 43-year-old Anthony McRae -- dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound off campus. The first of the two new laws would require anyone who does not have a gun license to undergo a federal national instant criminal background check before purchasing a gun, according to the legislation. "Universal background checks will help keep guns out of the hands of violent criminals, domest...

10 years after the Boston Marathon bombings, a community bears the psychological scars

Image
Ten years later, survivors of the Boston Marathon bombing attack recall the agony and the comeback as they work to help others through the trauma. There was no better place to watch the Boston Marathon than at the finish line on Boylston Street in Back Bay, according to Manya Chylinski, a resident of the neighborhood who has lived in Boston since the early 1990s. “There were a couple years where I watched it from somewhere other than the finish line, and that was wonderful. But the finish line is just different. There’s just a different energy there. No surprise, that’s where people are ending this incredible accomplishment,” Chylinksi told ABC News. On April 15, 2013, Chylinski was watching runners finish the 26.2-mile course when two terrorists planted pressure cooker bombs that exploded within seconds of each other, turning the celebratory scene into one of sheer panic and destruction. Three people were killed — 8-year-old Martin Richard, 23-year-old Lingzi Lu and 29-year-old Krystl...

Blac Chyna opens up about undoing cosmetic procedures amid rise in breast implant removals

Image
It's not just Blac Chyna removing implants. In 2020, more than 36,000 breast implants were removed — an almost 8% increase from the previous year. Model and reality TV star Blac Chyna, whose real name is Angela White, is opening up about her recent decision to undo years of cosmetic work, including getting her breast implants removed. The procedure, known as explant surgery, is becoming more common, in part, due to a larger social trend towards a more natural look. “I was so young, I just wanted that body, 'cause I saw everybody, you know, my crew, getting it. And I wanted to be with the 'it girls,'” White said in an interview with ABC News. Blac Chyna, known for her extreme hourglass figure, appearances on the red carpet, reality TV and in hip-pop music videos, became the alter ego that made Angela White famous, but in the process she says she began to lose her true self. Recently, she’s turned inward and started focusing on her health, got baptized and earned a doc...

Man ordered back to prison 2 years after his murder conviction was set aside

Image
Crosley Green has been ordered to return to prison, two years after being freed by a federal judge, who set aside his Florida murder conviction. When Crosley Green was released from a Florida prison in 2021 after serving 33 years for a murder he said he did not commit, he and family members who met him outside the penitentiary walls believed his long nightmare was over. As loved ones hugged Green and cried tears of joy, his lawyers said they were confident evidence discovered after his conviction would exonerate him. Green, however, has been ordered back to prison next week after the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 11th Circuit rejected his claim that his guilty verdict was obtained in violation of his constitutional rights. The appellate court described the evidence uncovered post-trial as "strictly circumscribed" and concluded it would not have changed the outcome of his 1990 conviction by an all-white Brevard County, Florida, jury. "The most important thing is an in...
