Police say two people were killed after shots rang out in a crowd in the home city of Florida’s flagship university

GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- Gunshots rang out in a crowd early Sunday, killing two people in the city that is home to Florida’s flagship university, authorities said.

Police officers had been conducting crowd control in downtown Gainesville, Florida, in a commercial corridor several blocks from the University of Florida campus when they heard gunshots, the police department said in a post.

The post didn't disclose how many people were shot but said two of the shooting victims later died from their injuries. Police were seeking the public's help for any information on the shootings.

Daniel Penny has been charged with second-degree manslaughter in the chokehold death of Jordan Neely on the NYC subway. Marine veteran Daniel Penny was charged with second-degree manslaughter and criminally negligent homicide Wednesday in connection with the chokehold death of Jordan Neely aboard a subway train. Penny pleaded not guilty to the charges and is free on $100,000 bail. His next court appearance is October 25. Members of Neely’s family sat in the second row during Penny's court appearance.
